Chapter 01Overview
The flow you’re building
This Manychat Instagram automation follows one path, from a public comment to a private conversation with a clear next step:
- 01Post or Reel“Comment GUIDE”
- 02Keyword commentTrigger fires
- 03Opening DMPrivate reply
- 04Tap or replyOpens the 24-hour window
- 05ResourceWhat you promised
- 06One questionSaved or branched
- 07Next stepContent, call or person
The opening DM isn’t an opt-in
It doesn’t subscribe the person or open the 24-hour window. Their reply, button tap or Quick Reply does. A website-link button doesn’t count, so design the first message to invite a tap.
Start with one post, one keyword and one useful promise. Other entry points, like DM keywords and Story replies: see Instagram DM automation. Is a comment bot safe? Read our Instagram comment bot guide.
Chapter 02Build
Build your Manychat Instagram automation in 5 steps
Connect the right Instagram account
Where to click: SettingsInstagramConnect
Use a professional account (Business or Creator) and approve the requested permissions. Managing a client? Have them grant access instead of sharing a password. Then pick one campaign, like a Reel that says “Comment GUIDE and I’ll send it.”
Add the post or Reel comment trigger
Where to click: AutomationsNew AutomationStart From Scratch
In the Flow Builder, add New Trigger › Instagram › User comments on your Post or Reel. Pick one post, set the keyword GUIDE, choose whether to add a public reply, then save. A specific keyword keeps unrelated comments out.
Write the opening DM people tap
Where to click: Send MessageSend as a Private Reply
Keep it to one content block with a regular button or Quick Reply: “Hey! Want the checklist from the Reel? Tap below and I’ll send it over.” Button: “Send the checklist.” Skip Open website here: it can send people away before the window opens.
Deliver the promised resource
After the tap, send exactly what you promised: “Here’s the checklist: [link].” A long welcome, an email gate or a pitch first adds friction. Asking for an email? Make it optional and say why.
Ask one question and route the answer
Where to click: ConditionsData Collection
Ask something that changes your next move. Use buttons and Conditions for a simple branch, or Data Collection to save open text on plans that support it. Tag each answer, add a human handoff, and send your CRM only what your team acts on.
A question that works: “What’s hardest right now: getting leads, replying to DMs or booking calls?” Then route each answer:
Getting leads
Send a resource that fits the goal.
Replying to DMs
Ask how many conversations they handle.
Booking calls
Check they sell through calls, then offer the link when they’re ready.
One question beats a form
Don’t ask for a phone number, budget, email and full story in one chat. One good question usually gets a better reply than a form disguised as a DM.

A starting script, not a template to paste
Swap the offer, the language and the question for your business. Never imply an automated message was typed by a person. More wording: Instagram DM templates.
Chapter 04Test
Test every state before going live
Use a second Instagram account you control and act like a stranger. The trigger runs once per person and post, so rerun a state from a fresh account or on another post.
States to test from a second account

Run one test conversation, start to finish
From a fresh test account, be a real lead: comment, tap, open the link, answer the question, then reply off-script. Read the thread the way they’ll see it.
Set Live, then read real threads
Where to click: PreviewSet Live
Go live only when every state passes, then read real threads, not just the builder preview. Reminders must respect the 24-hour window (opens in a new tab) after the person interacts: a commenter isn’t a subscriber you can message anytime.

Chapter 05Fix
Troubleshooting: why the DM doesn’t work
Check the connection, that the automation is live, the selected post and keyword, and Send as a Private Reply on the first message. Look for a competing comment trigger and Instagram message permissions.
The person may not have tapped or replied. Make the opening button a regular button or Quick Reply, not Open website, and connect the next messages after that tap.
Check the branch, the Data Collection field and the handoff logic. Make sure only one automation answers the same message.
The trigger only fires on a person’s first comment on that post. Use a fresh account or another post.
