Instagram DM automation: set up replies that turn into leads
Instagram DM automation starts from a comment, a DM keyword or a Story reply. Each shows a different intent: give each its own script, test and context.

Chapter 01Compare
What can trigger an automated Instagram DM?
Three triggers, three intents
| Trigger | What it tells you | Open with |
|---|---|---|
| Comment keywordWhat it tells you: They want what that post promised.Open with: The resource, behind one tap. | They want what that post promised. | The resource, behind one tap. |
| DM keywordWhat it tells you: They chose to start a conversation with you.Open with: One question about their situation. | They chose to start a conversation with you. | One question about their situation. |
| Story replyWhat it tells you: They reacted to one topic, today.Open with: Their answer, reflected back. | They reacted to one topic, today. | Their answer, reflected back. |
Story mentions, ad clicks and links into DMs are other Instagram DM automation entry points. Manychat also lists Follow to DM, in beta for eligible accounts: check that yours shows it. Comment edge cases: see the Instagram comment bot guide.
Start with one entry point
Match the first message to what the person just did. One generic welcome across every trigger feels disconnected. Wording to adapt: Instagram DM templates.

Chapter 03Trigger 2
DM keyword: ask first
Best when your bio or a Reel says “DM AUDIT.” The person chose to write to you, so skip the resource pitch and ask about their situation. Setup: the Keywords trigger (opens in a new tab).
- Bio CTA
DM AUDIT to see where your lead flow leaks.
- Trigger
An incoming DM contains AUDIT
- First reply
On it. Is this for your own account or a client’s?
- Lead
My own. I coach, mostly from referrals.
- Keep
Keyword AUDIT · own account · referrals
Test it
Send an ordinary sentence with the word in it: “can you audit my page?” Expected: it starts the flow only if you meant it to. Otherwise, pick a rarer keyword.
Chapter 04Trigger 3
Story reply: reflect it back
Best for a question or a poll tied to one Story. The reply is about that topic, today, so the first message repeats their answer instead of sending a generic welcome. Setup: the Story Reply trigger (opens in a new tab).
- Story
What’s harder: replying fast or knowing who’s ready to buy?
- Viewer
Knowing who’s ready to buy.
- Reply
So qualifying is the gap. How many new DMs do you get a week?
- Keep
The Story · their answer: qualifying
Test it
From one test account, reply to two different Stories. Expected: each first message names its own Story’s topic, not the same welcome.
Chapter 05Next reply
Carry the context into the next reply
Save the source with the contact, in a tag or a field. The next sales reply then starts from what the person already told you:
What to keep from each trigger
| Trigger | Save | The next reply should know |
|---|---|---|
| Comment keywordSave: The post and the keywordThe next reply should know: What they came for, and that they already have it | The post and the keyword | What they came for, and that they already have it |
| DM keywordSave: The keyword and where you asked for itThe next reply should know: They reached out first, and about what | The keyword and where you asked for it | They reached out first, and about what |
| Story replySave: The Story and their answerThe next reply should know: The problem they named, in their words | The Story and their answer | The problem they named, in their words |
When the reply is free text, like “can we talk?”, don’t jump to the calendar. Qualify first: answer from your offer, ask the one question your fit rule needs, then send the link.
Chapter 06Rules
The messaging rules that change your flow
Automated Instagram messages generally stay within 24 hours of the person’s last interaction, and Manychat blocks scheduled automation outside that window. A manual reply may have its own allowance: it isn’t a license for an automated drip.
Avoid unsolicited messages, repeated irrelevant prompts and spam-like copy. Check the current rules for your message type before you schedule a follow-up.
One owner per inbox
When several tools or flows can answer, set conversation routing and a pause or handoff where a person takes over. Duplicate replies hurt the experience and your data.
Official sources: messaging windows (opens in a new tab) and conversation routing for Instagram (opens in a new tab).
Chapter 07Measure
Measure the outcome, not the number of DMs
Tag each lead with its trigger, then compare the three on the same steps. The trigger that brings the most DMs isn’t always the one that books calls.
- 01Trigger firedComment, DM or Story
- 02First DMDelivered
- 03Reply or tapThe chat opens
- 04QualifiedMeets your fit rule
- 05Call proposedOnly after fit
- 06Call bookedCalendar-confirmed
Sync only what you use
Keep the source and answer in Manychat fields. Using a CRM or dashboard? Sync what your team uses and verify it before claiming attribution.
Chapter 08Fix
If the automation isn’t working
Check the connected account, that the trigger is live, the post and keyword, and whether the person already triggered a once-per-contact path. Test from another account and refresh permissions.
Look for overlapping keywords, the Default Reply, Meta Business Suite automatic responses and Instagram conversation routing when other apps are connected.
Check that the person tapped or replied after the first private reply, that the 24-hour window is open and that the branch has a next step.
Add an explicit pause or ownership rule and test from the human inbox. Tell the prospect when a person takes over.

Chapter 02Trigger 1
Comment keyword: deliver first
Best for a post that promises a resource. The trigger sends a private reply; per Manychat’s comments trigger documentation (opens in a new tab), the person’s tap or reply is what opens the conversation. Every Manychat menu is in the Manychat Instagram automation tutorial.

The Reel · keyword PLAN · their answer
Test it
From a second account, comment PLAN and don’t tap. Expected: the private reply arrives, then nothing else until the tap.
