Chapter 01Documented

Every DM limit Meta documents

Meta publishes these rules for messages sent through its official Instagram APIs, which tools like Manychat use. Each row names its page:

Instagram DM limits Meta documents

After a Click-to-Direct adLimit: Up to 7 days from their first messageSource: Send Messages (opens in a new tab)
Human Agent windowLimit: 7 days, for tagged replies from a personSource: Send Messages (opens in a new tab)

After the private replyLimit: More only if they respond, within 24 hoursSource: Private replies (opens in a new tab)
Text per messageLimit: 1,000 bytes of UTF-8 textSource: Send Messages (opens in a new tab)
Send API callsLimit: 100 a second per account; 10 for audio or videoSource: Rate limits (opens in a new tab)
Private reply callsLimit: 750 an hour per account, on posts and reelsSource: Rate limits (opens in a new tab)
Meta for Developers: Instagram API with Instagram Login and Graph API rate limits, checked October 27, 2026. Under the Messenger API for Instagram, Meta lists 300 Send API calls a second.

Rate limits count API calls, not people

They cap how fast an app can call Meta for one Instagram professional account. They don’t say how many people you can DM.

Chapter 02Not documented

The daily cap Meta doesn’t publish

Instagram has limits in place to stop direct messages that people may not want to get, like spam.

Instagram Help Center, checked October 27, 2026

If you’re warned about sending too many and keep going, you may not be able to send DMs for a period of time, per Instagram Help (opens in a new tab). It gives no number.

The per-day numbers are estimates

Blogs and AI answers quote caps by account age, like “20–50 DMs a day” for new accounts. The tool blogs we read on October 27, 2026 call them estimates, not Instagram rules.

Often quotedDocumented
A daily cap for DMs sent by handWhat Meta’s pages say: Limits exist; no number is published. Not documented
Lower caps for new accountsWhat Meta’s pages say: Nothing by account age.Not documented
How long a DM block lastsWhat Meta’s pages say: “A period of time”; no length is given. Not documented
A dash means Meta’s pages don’t document it, not that no limit exists. Instagram Help, Meta for Developers and Meta’s spam policy, checked October 27, 2026.

What Meta does say: its spam policy (opens in a new tab) bans posting, sharing or engaging, by hand or automatically, at “very high frequencies”. It may restrict accounts at lower ones when other spam signals show.

Chapter 03In practice

What it means for comment-to-DM

A comment-to-DM campaign is inbound: the person acts first, so the documented rules are the ones that count. Here’s the clock on one comment:

  1. 01CommentOn your post or Reel
  2. 02Private reply1 message, within 7 days
  3. 03They reply or tapOpens 24 hours
  4. 04Your next messages24 hours from their last message
  5. 05A person takes overHuman Agent: 7 days
Per Meta’s private replies and Send Messages pages, and Manychat’s comment trigger article, checked October 27, 2026.

Manychat adds a detail: its private reply doesn’t open the window (opens in a new tab). A reply, a regular button or a Quick Reply does; a website button doesn’t. Tests to run first: the Instagram comment bot guide.

Volume matters on big posts: Meta allows 750 private-reply calls an hour per account. Manychat says it adds a backend safeguard when comments pile up.

No cold DMs here

This page covers replies to people who commented or wrote first. Messaging strangers isn’t covered, or recommended.

Chapter 04Manychat

How Manychat handles it

Per Manychat’s Help Center, checked October 27, 2026, here’s what Manychat does with these rules:

  • Stops late automation

Messages scheduled for a contact outside the 24-hour window aren’t sent.

  • Tags your manual replies

Inbox messages you send by hand get Meta’s Human Agent tag automatically.

  • Fires on the first comment

Only a person’s first comment per post fires the trigger: an Instagram limit, per Manychat.

  • Rotates comment replies

Your public reply variations rotate at random, to keep replies natural.

An approved tool isn’t a shield

Manychat says Meta can still flag too many automated messages sent too quickly, and that it can’t reverse a restriction (its Meta approval article (opens in a new tab)).
