Manychat automation, mapped to the conversation you want

Manychat automation can start a conversation, deliver a resource, save an answer and route the next step. See what each channel supports.

Chapter 01Channels

Pick the entry point

Manychat automation starts where the conversation starts. Each channel opens it differently, so pick the entry point before you build.

Check your plan and account

A trigger listed here can still be missing from your account. Confirm it appears, then test it, before you plan a funnel around it.

Each channel has its own guide: Manychat Instagram automation for comment-to-DM, the WhatsApp automation guide for templates and costs, and the Facebook Messenger chatbot guide for Page conversations.

Chapter 02Build

Build one automation you can actually test

Manychat lead generation starts with one flow per entry point, not a library. Every useful flow has the same five parts.

  1. 01TriggerComment, keyword
  2. 02MessageWhat they asked
  3. 03ResponseReply or tap
  4. 04StateField or tag
  5. 05Next stepGuide, call, person
Each arrow is something you can check. A step you can’t check isn’t ready to go live.

Building it in the Flow Builder? The Manychat chatbot guide walks through a first bot on any channel. Then run each channel’s test below.

One test plan per channel

Job
Instagram: deliver a guideTrigger: Comment keyword on a ReelData saved: Goal (custom field)Next action: Guide, question or personFailure test: Comment twice; skip the tap
WhatsApp: answer an inquiryTrigger: Keyword in a first messageData saved: Need (tag)Next action: Answer, call or teammateFailure test: Follow up after 24 hours
Messenger: route a questionTrigger: Keyword in a Page messageData saved: Topic (tag)Next action: FAQ, call or teammateFailure test: Ask for a person
A plan to run on your own test account, not a verified result. Note what happened in each row.

A preview isn’t delivery

The builder preview doesn’t prove the channel delivered the message. Run each row from a separate, real account.

Want a starting point? Manychat templates give you flows with fields, tests and a handoff to adapt.

Chapter 03Route

Three outcomes, three different routes

The same trigger can lead to three good outcomes. Forcing every branch toward a call is poor automation.

  • Only wants the guide

Deliver it and stop. No quiz before the link.

  • Describes a problem you solve

Ask a useful follow-up and save the context.

  • Billing or something sensitive

Route to a teammate, with the conversation attached.

Chapter 04Context

Pass the entry context along

The flow’s job ends when the lead writes back. Whatever answers next should know why they came, without asking again.

What each entry point tells the next reply

Entry point
Comment on a postContext to pass on: The post and the keyword they typed
Keyword in a DMContext to pass on: The keyword, so the resource or offer asked
Story replyContext to pass on: The Story, and what they replied
Referral link or adContext to pass on: The link or ad, and its promise
New conversationContext to pass on: Only the channel: ask what brought them
Save it in a custom field or tag in the automation that fired. The channel comes with the conversation.
  1. 01TriggerKeyword, comment, Story
  2. 02Manychat flowSends, saves the source
  3. 03Lead repliesIn their own words
  4. 04Setter takes overReads channel, source, keyword
  5. 05Next stepAnswer, ask, book, hand off
The flow owns steps 1 to 3. From step 4, the reply needs what steps 1 and 2 saved.

Chapter 05Decide

Rules, Manychat AI or a setter?

Rules

A fixed Manychat flow

Best for
Known paths: send the guide, ask a few questions, apply simple conditions.
Limits
Unplanned answers need a default reply or a person.
Choose it when
You can list every branch.
Native AI

Manychat AI Step

Best for
Open replies inside a flow, from a goal and your business context.
Limits
Depends on your plan and channel. See what Manychat AI does.
Choose it when
People answer in their own words.
Setting layer

A dedicated AI setter

Best for
Lead state across messages, fit rules for your offer and calls your calendar confirms.
Limits
Assess it against what your current Manychat setup already does.
Choose it when
Leads stall between the first reply and a call.

AI Step currently supports Facebook Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok and Telegram, per Manychat’s AI Step documentation (opens in a new tab) (checked September 28, 2026). It can save the reply to a field. Don’t expect the same behavior on every channel: test each one.

Chapter 06Fix

Diagnose a flow that looks live but doesn’t reply

0 of 7 completed

Still silent? Manychat suggests refreshing the channel’s permissions. Official sources: general automation troubleshooting (opens in a new tab) and Instagram automation troubleshooting (opens in a new tab).
