Chapter 01Definition

What is an Instagram comment bot?

The phrase covers two very different tools. This guide is about the second one: replying to comments on your own content.

Not this guide

Bots that comment elsewhere

Best for
Posting automated comments on other people’s posts to get attention.
Limits
Reads as spam and risks restrictions. We don’t cover or recommend it.

Replying to comments on your posts

Best for
Someone comments the word you invited. Manychat sends a relevant private reply.
Limits
The conversation continues only when the person interacts.

The difference is about safety too: one answers people who asked, the other interrupts people who didn’t.

Chapter 02The path

How comment-to-DM works on your posts

Picture your Reel “3 DMs that book calls” with the caption “Comment GUIDE and I’ll send it.” A useful path has six moments:

  1. 01Comment GUIDEMatches the trigger
  2. 02Private replySent by Manychat
  3. 03Tap or replyOpens the 24-hour window
  4. 04The guideWhat you promised
  5. 05Next questionFits what they asked
  6. 06Call or personIf they’re a fit

The private reply isn’t an opt-in

Per Manychat’s comment trigger documentation (opens in a new tab), the first private reply doesn’t opt the person in or open the 24-hour window. A reply, button tap or Quick Reply does. A website button doesn’t count.

To build it: one post, one keyword, a public reply, then an opening DM with a regular button or Quick Reply. Every menu, click by click, is in the Manychat Instagram automation tutorial. Manychat’s own walkthrough: auto-DM links from comments (opens in a new tab).

Chapter 03Safety

Three rules that prevent a broken flow

  • Keep the first DM on topic

Answer the comment’s promise. “How can I help?” loses the context.

  • Respect the messaging window

Follow-ups depend on the person’s last interaction. See the 24-hour window (opens in a new tab).

  • One owner per conversation

Two replies? Check other flows and apps. A handoff pauses the automation.

An official connection isn’t a pass

Replying through Manychat is a supported use, but repetitive public replies or aggressive messaging can still get an account restricted.

Chapter 04Test

Test the edge cases first

Run each test from a second account before you promote the post. Compare what happens with the expected result:

0 of 4 completed

Repeat tests need a fresh account or another post. Official source: the Post and Reel Comments trigger (opens in a new tab).

Chapter 05In practice

What the post tells you after the tap

Delivering the guide is the flow’s job, and often the end of it. When the reply is a question about fit or price, the next message is a sales decision. Flow, Manychat AI or a setter? Compare them in the Instagram chatbot guide.

Chapter 07Measure

What to count, from comment to call

Count people, not events, and leave your test accounts out. Then the gap between two steps tells you what to fix:

Step
CommentersCount: People who commented the keyword, once per postIf it drops here: Make the promise or keyword clearer
Private repliesCount: Replies Manychat sentIf it drops here: Check the trigger and permissions
Taps or repliesCount: Conversations that openedIf it drops here: Make the opening choice more useful
Qualified leadsCount: Leads that meet your fit ruleIf it drops here: Review your fit questions
Confirmed callsCount: Calls your calendar confirmedIf it drops here: Check when the link is offered

Report what you can verify

A link click isn’t a booked call, and a reply isn’t a qualified lead. The whole funnel, from post to call: Instagram lead generation.
